Competency Description

If educational experiences, such as taking an online course, are to result in genuine learning, they need to be accessible to all learners. In fact, for most educational institutions, it’s the law. In this competency, you will learn about the legal and regulatory requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that govern online educational content. You will discover what it takes to make such content accessible to everyone—in specific terms, what it means for content to be “perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.”

This course is also available in the Design Project Leadership Track.

You will have six months to complete this competency and can review the materials at any time during this period. If you wish to access these resources after the six months, you will need to re-enroll.

Competency Outcomes

Upon completion of this competency you will be able to:

  • Identify the steps necessary to locate U.S. Department of Education regulatory information.
  • Advise clients in the application of regulations and accessibility standards that are incorporated into effective design strategies.
  • Identify legal and regulatory requirements for a given development.
  • Identify the steps needed to make videos, infographics, and tables accessible, meeting all ADA standards.
  • Identify the steps needed to create ADA accessible PDFs, Word documents, and HTML course components.
  • Identify what makes website content perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.
